listened to the new viagra boys album, viagr aboys today!
i was introduced to this band in 2018 by my radio professor in college, when they released the music video for "sports". initially i thought they were a bit dumb, but that's kind of the point!!
theyre a lot of fun, a little sleazy with it. sometimes they hit you with something unexpectedly profound but a lot of their social commentary is just banksy-level with some crude humor thrown in (i jest).
("common sense", one of their songs i hold near and dear to my heart due to how fucking REAL it is. it reminds me of being a kid and fucking up somehow, and the speeches my mom would give about how i have no common sense. one of her favorite things to say, to illustrate her point, is to claim that if i were given the choice between chocolate cake and being beaten, i would enthusiastically volunteer to be beaten. obviously, i would go for the cake, if given that choice. but i believe it says something about my mother, if she truly sees me that way. that's not to say i haven't chosen the hard way in the past -- being raised by boomers will make you think you have to suffer to earn anything at all.)
viagr aboys is a return to form. "man made of meat" is the perfect opening song for this album. nihilistic, loud, fun, a little goofy dumb with it. perfect for 2025. one of the best bits of this music video happens at around the minute-forty mark, when (who im assuming is) the singer pushes a drunk man flying from the ceiling to vomit across a massive canvas. i, too, am sick of those talentless paint-bucket drip videos!
one of the best lyrics from "man made of meat"?:
i'm subscribed to your mom's onlyfans / i spend five bucks a month to get pictures of her flappy giblets...
fuck yes.
id say "dirty boyz" is another contender for best on this album. this one's nearly skipless -- it only becomes tiresome for those last two tracks, which are much slower and not nearly as fun as we started out.
